Not even sure Google knows what they will do with Fuchsia.
Many do "think" that eventually they might go that route... Fuchsia could power smart appliances (IOT), smartphones, and desktop PCs. Or it might be a minor experiment.
you need to control both hardware and software (close system). that will allow google to do so. as for success or not, who knows? OS is not easy battle to fight. dead body everywhere.. it all depend upon who is the key personnel. google still on the learning curve on hardware, hopefully, they got better footing on OS.
They already control the software.... But Android was made for 3rd Party developers and OEMs. You have so many options on what File Manager or Texting Application to use, each OEM does their own tweaking of the UI or even core apps. But the real issue is the update process, it's been seven months since Nougat was released on the world and only 5% of Android users have upgraded.
But I agree, it would be nice if Google were a little more Apple, and worked on the software and the hardware as a single product. Been impressed with MS finally getting into the PC hardware business....
The runtime is just a layer so yes its possible its possible Fuchsia could replace Android. What Google is going to do is push developers to use a common SDK called Flutter where devs can write apps for IOS, Android and Fuchsia, this will get mentioned in the upcoming Google I/O. Then when Android goes away at some future date it won't be a huge shock.
My prediction is that in a couple years Chromebooks will be running Fuchsia with the Android runtime. This will let devs into a smaller ecosystem where any issues can be worked out without creating problems for Android on phones. Once that transition is complete then phones are next, meanwhile devs are already creating their apps on Flutter so very little learning curve.
i hate to say this, but AI is eventually going to replace dev. appliacation will be the key (structure and logic, but not code).
Card-based, RTOS, swiping interface - where have we seen this before... ?
Maybe there is hope for a spiritual successor to beloved BB10, spiritual successor of PBOS, spiritual successor of Web OS, after all.
Maybe good ideas do not die, they just change form.
or people get hired like Duarte from Palm and he's been pushing Android step by step and Fuchsia will be his final form. :D
If Fuchsia eliminates Android's screen ratio limitations that would be happy news for people wanting a next generation Passport.
BeOS? Frankly, Google should just brought BB, modify the BB10 and put run time on it... get hold of both hardware and software... straight out Droid mess 1st by eliminate crappy apps (get set of app that required on handset memory, -such as dictionary, calculator, Navigation map, overlay the web version of update, such as store, traffic, etc.)... agree, get a good SDK,but get into Apple's iOS terretory? Swift is very good... unless you know the iOS hardware well, you might not be able to take advantage of the speed that acheived by swift... (remember, Java want to do that, end up with very heavy overhead... lagging like rolling stone).
Why would they even consider doing that, versus what they are doing? Using their own in-house developed Magenta kernel, Dart programming language, and Flutter SDK... from the ground up. I could maybe see Google buying BlackBerry simply for patents... but never to save BB10. They would be better off sticking with Android as is for 10 more years.
Not invented here symptom? too late anyhow.. BB currently is rich in cash (after the qualcomm settlement), wait and see the new paradigm to mature, when AI kick in, who knows. brain chip might be the last one to stand... let's battle begin. (droid do have good bones from BeOS, but little left to be identify now. BeOS was famous for its speed and efficiency, hopefully, 2 time is the charm for Google).
Fuchsia could be an attempt to get onto car platforms. Don't think Google has anything at the moment that can compete with QNX.
What's the connection between BeOS and Android?
This OS Almost Made Apple an Entirely Different Company | WIRED
it is a very small world. especially for OS dev. (as ex Be share holder, sad to see be loved Be to be a bloat ware now).
I think Fuschia will be Google's phone OS as a successor to Android that it will keep to itself, so that Google can finally have the hardware+software vertically integrated device business model that Apple has had for years. This would be different fromthe Pixel line, which runs Android. Android device makers will be left the short shrift.

Perhaps there's more to Pixel's future as Google just hired away Apple chip architect Manu Gulati. This may be done to simply not rely on Qualcomm or maybe to somehow integrate Fushcia. Thoughts, anyone?
