Just updated my KEY² to ABD173 July patch.

Besides losing all my word substitutions (empty list) I noticed that the device doesn't ask for encryption password pre OS anymore.

Did BlackBerry stop using Full Disk Encryption (FDE)?

I'm pretty sure the KEY² was advertised as FIPS 140-2 FDE.

Since there is no passphrase request prior to the boot into OS I think it has to be FBE (Google introduced it as Direct Boot in Nougat).

(Implicitly) losing FDE would be huge to me. Am I missing something?

Yes, the fact they moved from FDE to Direct Boot which is more secure as it removes the option from users to lower the level of encryption and uses file based encryption. - https://developer.android.com/traini...es/direct-boot You can learn more here - https://www.androidcentral.com/andro...at-direct-boot or watch this.

    Thanks for clarifying.

I had read the KEY² specs on CrackBerry and didn't look further. As CrackBerry's stated FDE I thought BlackBerry would have overruled AOSP's decision to go with FBE.

Security is arguable both directions and depends on the usecase (e.g. stolen/lost vs usage) IMHO.

Interesting point that I never really thought of until now, depsite answering similar questions recently. Just about every KEY2 article out there and their own material still says FDE.

The BlackBerry Help pages also say FDE... https://help.blackberry.com/en/secur...788500979.html
