with BlackBerry 10 OS I could easily call an Outlook contact with the following number format: +49 (0421) 12345678. I know this is not correct and makes more sense on a printed business card. However I have a lot of contacts saved in this format (coming from vCards).

BlackBerry 10 would take this number and call the following: +49 (0) 42112345678. Android OS tries to call +49042112345678 which is and incorrect number.

Is there a way to solve this with Android other than changing a lot of numbers?

+49(0)42112345678 --> Do you mean that the parenthesis are actually being dialed?
+49042112345678 --> The only difference are the parens?

what do the parens mean when dialing? *? or #? or is this a way to dial an internal extension?

    thanks for the input.

Correct. The parentthesis are shown in the call informations on BlackBerry 10 OS.

+49 is for Germany, (0421) is the local prefix for the state in germany. You can dial 0421 12345678 from inside Germany. For roaming call you need to dial +49 421 12345678 (without the first 0). That's why Android calls with this number format do not work. Android OS will call +490421123....which is incorrect.

BlackBerry 10 OS was just intelligent enough to correct this number format automatically.
