If a 32 second reboot is so important when things go awry, why isn't it just an option in the OS?

As the title suggests.

And how does it differ from just powering off and waiting a bit technically?

You'd think that a power off would be better, but at least with my Windows PC, for whatever reason a reboot seems to make newly installed programs stick, not a power cycle. Not sure why.

But is that the same for a BlackBerry phone? We have restart, 32 second, and power off. Computers only have two of those, no?

Yup, just the reset and shut down. What I was getting at was if you install a new program on Windows, the program often prompts for a restart, not a shutdown.

One is a soft reset, one is a hard reset. Soft reset still has power connections, things active in background etc. Hard reset cuts it off just like a battery pull.

I feel stupid because I know this, but it has been so long since I had to do a battery pull!

I do. It was more fun because you actually had to do more than holding a button, it felt way more satisfying :)

What's the equivalent for a non-BB Android phone?

I too would appreciate an easier and more convenient way to Hard Boot the K2. I find I have to Hard Boot every second day in order to keep the PKB from misbehaving. Couldn't we get something in the OS that could be programmed to Hard Boot overnight? Enabled or not by user of course.

My 9900 sometimes took 2-3 battery pulls per day! So this is definately better. [emoji23]

Should be one of these two:

1. An extra selection option on the power menu that appear with a long press of the power button. Currently there is Power Off, Restart and Lock Now; simply add Reboot

2. Replace 'Restart' with 'Reboot' which is a much better way to restart the device anyway.

I was just adding the thing about BBOS phones as an aside.

I actually use an S9, and I can say that it's never had any kind of slowdown or freeze-up or anything like that to necessitate a re-boot of any kind. Not outside of a system update.

Now, I have had to re-boot it once to fix a glitch of the notifications not coming through. I use the Glimpse app to momentarily wake up the screen when I get a notification and show the notification on the lock screen. I have my S9 set up with the always on display, but it doesn't normally turn the lock screen on when it gets a notification. Glimpse does that. Once it got out of sync and a reboot fixed it.

I think the closest thing on a Samsung is holding both volume buttons, then pressing the power button down until the screen goes off. That simply forces a shutdown.

I do remember having to do that on my son's S8 after a system update (from Nougat to Oreo) when it got stuck in one of those "updating apps ## of ##". A hard shutdown and then turning it back on fixed it.

I think the problem is that in order to restart the phone automatically, some circuit will still be active. This is not the same as a battery pull, unfortunately.

Actually, I just remembered that the Amazon Fire tablets have a similar reboot method. Their suggestion is to hold the power button down for 40 seconds to force a shutdown. Then press it again to restart. It works for an original 1st gen Fire from 2011, and the 8th gen from last year.
