I'm starting this thread to monitor BBMo's ability to get security patches out.

On the day a new Android security bulletin is issued, I will record the percentage of device variants updated to the current month, and the percentage of device variants updated to no later than the previous month.

I will NOT include the device variants managed by Optiemus and BB PT Merah Putih.

Apr 1: 66% on Mar, 96% on Feb or higher
May 6: 72% on Apr, 87% on Mar or higher
Jun 3: 36% on May, 91% on Apr or higher
Jul 1: 92% on Jun, 93% on May or higher
Aug 5: 79% on Jul, 94% on Jun or higher
Sep 3: 5% on Aug, 81% on Jul or higher*
Oct 7: 84% on Sep, 87% on Aug or higher**
Nov 4: 24% on Oct, 86% on Sep or higher**

    * TCL / BlackBerry spat?
** based on Motion and KEY² LE - KEY² info cannot be confirmed for Sep

Computed: 90% of devices get updates within 60 days.

On the last day of each month, I will record the percentage of device variants updated to the current month, and the percentage of device variants updated to no later than the previous month.

Mar 31: 50% on Mar, 95% on Feb or higher.
    Thanks Conite.

    Thanks for this.

But I am to understand that because of BB kernel hardening, full key encryption, and cryptographic keys, it's devices don't need security updates as often? I think I read that somewhere other then below.

Is it not also down to the phone service provider (carrier) in each region. Only asking, Vodafone UK aren't the best for pushing out updates as I have experienced in the past.

But having both would be the ultimate.

As far as disclosed vulnerabilities go, BB Android has historically provided some level of protection out of the box against root based attacks. For everything else you're probably better off by being on the latest update.

When you say something strange is going on, elaborate. I can see percentage updates have dropped, but an opinion piece would be helpful.

Something either very good, or very bad. Either Pie, or a disruption of a nefarious nature.

Lol. Honestly, there is no middle ground here. What's happening is unprecedented - apart from a year ago just prior to Oreo coming out.

I would be saying it was Pie automatically if it wasn't for all of the other negative stuff lately.

You're comparing this % drop to OREO last year, except, as you well know, 1) there was lots of Buzz around it, 2) there was a small OREO prep update sent out, 3) with Fanfare I may add, it was released to a thankful community!

So to recap this time around, 1) no Buzz, 2) no pre PIE update, 3) Zero fanfare!

Are updates actually at risk of coming to an end? Spill it baby!

TCL didn't create any fanfare - that was only us.

BlackBerry had a small beta program, but we all discovered it was useless and unnecessary - so I'm not surprised they did not repeat that.

And the "Oreo-prep" string was obtained from a cryptic Rogers belch. For all we know, ACA360/ACB168 are the pre-Pie builds.

If my calculations are correct, there is about 26 days before we should start to worry about Pie

I say we are in the eye of the storm right now. The next update needs to be Pie, or we've got trouble.

I haven’t received PIE on XR either. Nobody complaining on the iMore threads so we should be ok.
