all that work went into it and I'm sure some are already built so why not?
For people in developing countries that can't afford bb10 and just can afford a cheap phone. In developing countries BIS is also good cause of data compression. They can also get good deals for Bbm and data plans.

Here is a pro tip. According to the latest numbers from BlackBerry, 2 year old BlackBerry smartphones are currently out selling BlackBerry 10 devices by a healthy margin. BlackBerry is launching the 9720 because they hope and pray people will buy it. Because BB10 by itself certainly isn't enough.
in emerging country like indonesia (20% blackberry subscribers) it is much cheaper to buy regular data plan... $2.5 for 600MB to 2 GB data, while the lowest BIS Plan it's about $4.5 BBM + Social network only....
plus many people in emerging country buy BB phone to use BBM why you buy an outdated hardware, OS if you can buy cheap android device less than $150 from major mobile vendor (samsung, LG, Lenovo etc) , newer OS (4.1 jelly bean) , and can running BBM
Blackberry has loss their top spot in indonesia and being replaced by samsung...and losing their subscribers to Apple, samsung and other android device, why do you think 9720 outdated phone can help Blackberry ? what BB need in emerging market is entry level, less than $150 BB10 phone,
i don't think BB can do that because their hardware system requirement (2GB Ram, 720x720 or 1280x720 screen resolution) make it's not possible right now for them to develop low end BB10 smartphone.
Seems like a desperate cash grab at the expense of future growth to me. BB10 is a great OS with excellent hardware but it simply can't compete with ios and Android with its pathetic app ecosystem. In order to spur BB10 app development BB needs to rapidly grow its BB10 user base now, and it's hard to see how encouraging loyal BB users to stay on BB7 achieves that. Why not use some of those cash reserves to subsidize Q5 upgrades in the developing world?

I think the production lines are stacked, and where will they go with the stock but selling them?
Then they should also make an updated 9900 to cater for business users who don't want a BB10 device due to lack of BIS/BES and for those of us who still want physical buttons and a trackpad.
Legacy devices users in large numbers are either keeping their existing phones or switching platforms rather than going to BB10 judging by the sale figures so a premium OS7 device would seem to have good sales potential.
The reason behind launching this device is that it offers an upgrade to the range at the 9320 end of the market that cannot yet be covered by a bb10 handset and this is accomplished by not losing money on the hardware as would be the case if they simply charged less for the 9900 before anyone makes that suggestion again.
One thing I do wonder is when will cb rename this sub-forum and drop the bold from the name since BB are only calling it the 9720 and when the forum will be moved into the official list since it is obviously no longer a rumour either.
This would be a stupid idea on their part, this device that has just launched will have taken very little resourcing to produce and would have almost no impact on sales, whereas a new premium model would take up more resources and all it would really do for them is steal a few sales from bb10 because realistically if somebody is choosing to move to android/ios instead of bb10 then it is not for things in bb7.
If they had only retained the Trackpad and physical buttons on the Q then I feel that this would have encouraged far more legacy users to buy it, the way they put the Q package together was just too much of a leap for traditional BlackBerry users to be comfortable with.
Let us get used to the new OS and if they really must phase out the trackpad and buttons then do it with the generation 2 devices when users had got used to BB10 and had bought into it.
Instead, they moved too quickly and alienated existing users without having the wow factor to make people move over from other platforms.
BB10 may well be a great OS but the problem is that not enough people will ever discover how good it is.
It seems that 9900 users are saying no to the Q in droves.
With the 9900 being 2 years old now an updated version would surely sell well to the folks who would like to update to a new device and stay with BB but are not buying the Q and are keeping their phones because they don't see the Q as being for them, or moving platforms.
So if this sells better than BB10 is are they going to kill BB10?
Didn't they already kill BB10 with the crappy launch ???
but BB10 is cheap..they slash prices daily
Because the Z and the Q are not selling?
I, for one, miss BIS.
Bit too soon to be making such a declaration, one of the issues with all BB devices is that their owners are not all conditioned to update immediately on a new device unlike with apple.
Selling well to existing bbos users has been shown to be a non-profitable undertaking and that is unlikely to change with a new one so they would have spent those resources for nothing, whereas with this 9720 they have basically just bunged a 9790 into a cheaper casing to act as a replacement for a 9320.
The root of the problem is that bb10 is a resource hog. This new phone is just a weak temporary measure.
I think it's good to wait a bit before fully committing to BB10. Reason being we need cheaper BB10 phones on the used market. Not too many people are willing to spend several hundred dollars/getting into a contract just to try a BlackBerry out. Getting a used one at ~$200 for a test drive however is much a much more palatable solution.
Because some do not think that BB10 is better nor as secure.
I don't think 9720 is cheap...
it's actually expensive....
you can pay less and get android device with data plan of your choice...
BB has only one data plan....
BES..
BIS.. with serveral variations like social plan, chat plan, email plan, etc...
......
Looks like BB need the sales in UK, BlackBerry 9720 Touch Screen - 9720 Smartphone Specs & Features - UK
The problem is that many BlackBerry consumers mindset are different of that from people using Iphones/android. I've been reading the forums here and it seems like many do not switch to newer devices offered by blackberry. Iphone users are willing to switch every year when new iphone comes out and BlackBerry users they don't even wanna switch fro their 3 or 5 year old devices. The 9720 will be good upgrade to those who won't spend for the BlackBerry 10 and it is also a good phone for those who want to try BlackBerry for the first time.

Yes believe it or not there are many people who don't need a phone with 2GB RAM, Angry Birds and a full *nix-like OS ... there's a big market for such people and if BlackBerry drop them then they will lose out on money. And it's not just users in the 'developing world' either.
I've seen loads of 9720s in the financial district of London - in fact my boss got a 9720 when her old BlackBerry died. I think the 9720 is now the standard BBOS enterprise phone - and presumably why BlackBerry launched it.
