I have a secondhand bb 9720 and i put my own simcard in that works on a other blackberry, and it keeps saying "insert simcard" on top of the screen and SOS. i have tried the paper trick several times in different thicknesses but it also doesnt work. what should i do?

I assume it is unlocked because it was used by a friend before me, the person who had it before me had the same provider as I and it is not blacklisted because the friend gave it to me personally.

Is the phone unlocked? Does this phone work with your provider? Are you sure the phone isn't blacklisted (reported lost/stolen).

SOS means that it's a stolen phone and the police is on its way....

    Kidding!

It just means that you can just do SOS calls. Make sure it's compatible with your network

Is your 9720 from the same carrier as your SIM card? If not, is it unlocked?

I highly doubt that it is not unlocked because it worked with its previous owner

Since the OP stated it was a friend they got the phone from, OP, try your SIM in their phone or try again in a different phone to make sure the SIM is not damaged now. If it works in another phone, try another SIM, if that does not work in this problematic phone but works in another, then your phone is hosed. Reload the OS, try again. Still fails, get your friend to refund your money and take the the damaged phone back.
