Looks like BBRY is trying to produce a new BB7 device with ho hum specs so as not to outshine BB10.

Or alternatively, they are releasing it with specs that are a clear upgrade from the 9320 it is intended to replace in their product range.

why cant the 9900 price be dropped to the price of the curves and sell that in markets where it was too expensive before?

Things like the casing of the 9900 and even the display would not allow them to be profitable doing that.

They haven't called it a bold, people are jumping to that conclusion based on the numbering when it could just as easily have been chosen to indicate it was somewhere between a 9320 and a 9790.

But they did by using the 97xx series nomenclature.

Funny how Apple and Samsung can drop the cost of their high end phones every year when the new models come out and demote the ones they replaced in price and still make money but BlackBerry is apparently using some super exotic stuff that doesn't allow them to do this.

Apple are able to do it because they are working on higher margins than everyone else and Samsung don't actually tend to do it either, they steadily phase out their old models just like everyone else does.

isn't that the problem though? the 9790 (and the 9360) are very aestetically pleasing, this (from what we`ve seen, it is a leak after all) is far from pleasing to the eye.

Well a 2.8 inch screen would be OK for a device with a trackpad. So basically a down market 9900. They should just call it the B5 to be in line with the new nomenclature. Leaving the B7 for a possible 9900 upgrade ( wishful thinking for BD) or a C7 because it is pretty Curve like and leave the B7 for the Bold.

This device is almost inevitably the final bbos device so why would they give it bb10 naming style, they do not want people to be confused in that manner because this device would give a bad impression of bb10 and is aimed at a more price conscious end of the market that is less concerned about specs and OSes anyway.

I personally thought the 9360 looked fairly bad and as far as this one, maybe we could wait until we see official pics before dismissing it because as we see time and time again, devices tend to look a lot worse in early photos of early hardware, particularly with all that removable plastic stuff still on them, although despite that I would still say it looks nicer than a 9320 which is what it will be aimed at replacing.

I tend to disagree with the numbering being one family and the name another. I do agree a new number might have worked better.

If you look carefully you will see styling clues from the Bold, Curve and Torch line(the ridged back)

I don't think they will call it anything, just the 9720, the whole OS7 lineup streamlined into one low end device. This is not a 9790, how I know that? It has an FM radio that only existed in the Curve lineup. BBM connected FM radio by the way

My Bold 9900 was $599 and I think still is almost 2 years later. Also pretty sure I can buy a GS2 and GS3 still.

As mentioned before, economies of scale at play. You do realize that the dropped price for iPhone 4 is still quite high. Yes with a contract (probably with a commitment to have data and voice plan of a certain price range) the iPhone can be obtained for less (free for 3 year commitment) . But have you tried to buy a iPhone 4 without contract from a legitimate reseller? They still want $700 for a locked model! You may find some exceptions from carriers trying to attract the economic buyers like Koodo in Canada. But that is a lot of money for a 3 year old phone.

If it is the final BBOS device ( maybe) then they should just stick with the Bold or Curve.

I wouldn't be so sure about existing devices seeing any changes, this is a new device that will lead to new sales so using some resources on it makes sense, but that isn't the case for all the other devices.
