Hopefully they will slash the price faster than usual.
That may have zero impact, because first impressions will count a lot. Why price it far too high with a strategy to cut it later? They WILL have to cut it later to unload product, but the impression right out of the gate is "too much money, what else you got, Mr. Phone Dealer?" People will remember their first impression.

Maybe they have guaranteed customers (governments, large agencies) willing to pay due to much higher costs switching to BB10? Since they get service revenue from 7.1 phones, they probably could have taken less margin to get the monthly service money.

There is no company alive that would be so incompetent as to release old software and hardware at prices that compete with flagship phones (Nexus), and yet here we are.

I don't think this was meant as budget phone for mass market appeal. I think it's just for those that need a new phone on the legacy OS for BES compatibility where it is necessary. They want to make some money on it too. Would having it cheaper help them? I wouldn't expect this to be a big seller even at $100 anyway. At least that's my take.

    The 9720 isn't a low budget phone, it's just a OS 7.1 phone. Come on, that's not a curve!
Does it matter what dumb name they give it? Curve, Bold, Torch, whatever, it doesn't matter. It's never going to sell at that price point.

I mean for heavens sake it costs more than a 9900, and that is a Bold!

Anybody think enterprises might have been asking for a new legacy phone. I never heard BB say this phone was for people on a budget and anyway the point of an older BB in emerging markets is BISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!! As well Nokia does not mind losing money on the hardware since they want to regain marketshare!!!! Two separate business plans so stop the comparisons.

And this is exactly what I said on the announcement page on the Crackberry homepage. I was expecting $180 at the most but it turns out that Blackberry doesn't learn. $300 buys you a phone with 4 times the cores, 4 times the RAM, just higher than 2 times the screen resolution, I will assume a 2 times as big battery and an 8 mp camera. This is stupid and for ~$100 you can get a Lumia 520/521 with 16 times the storage, a much higer res and bigger screen, a better camera and more apps with 2 times the amount of cores. I just don't get it. Does Blackberry want to lose its relatively good standing in the emerging markets.

So sad, they haven't learnt anything.

Makes you wonder if they're going for users or margin on each phone sold. I'm thinking the latter, as they must understand that they're pricing their phones too high.

    What a disaster!!

I was arguing that this phone was necessary as a low end (sub-$200) phone in the BB lineup.

At this price, for $70 more you can get a Q5. It's ridiculous.

It has curve like looks and specs aren't anything that much higher then the curve, so in my book it's a curve.

Holy wow! $280 for a 9720 with a washed up BB7 OS or significantly less than that for a fresh Nokia powered by WP8...hmm...

I remember an article from Forbes about how Nokia could easily take the emerging market away from BlackBerry and low end Android and it honestly wouldn't surprise me one bit if they do.

I am sure that they will slash the price. $280 is just too much for a phone with a deprecated OS, underwhelming specs and a 2.7" screen. It is way overpriced.

I am just wondering why did BBRY even bother to release this phone if they want to be taken seriously as a company? This is like Jim and Mike all over again. They never seem to learn from their past mistakes.

By far. And I expected specs of the 9720 comparable to the 9900/9930. If they were going to release a phone with the specs of the 9720, I don't get why they didn't just ship some 9350/9360/9370's out there as the specs are pretty much identical. Instead, they just wasted more R&D money on a device that they basically already made.

The lumia 521 pretty much destroys it in value.
The Lumia 521, assuming it is a reasonably well-functioning Windows Phone 8, would destroy the Bold 9720 in value even if the latter was $80. However, at least an $80 Bold 9720 would be a reasonably attractive device for very budget-conscious consumers.

but if you compare it to other phones its only on par with an iphone 4 or a s3

and still is behind as far as software goes

low end = mid range for bbry

remeber this is a company that still thinks it rules the world and everyone must listen to how they define user experience
even if its is unnatural and 10 years out of date interface
