Nobody said the 9720 would be an entry level device and priced as such. It has better specs than the Curve 9320 which can be had for $150 on prepaid in Canada.

Keep in mind the only reason for the 9720 is to accommodate the Bold 9900's update cycle. The target market is enterprise. The pricing is fine.

And why do you think BlackBerry even launched in the first place when there were already many 7.1 devices out there.
Why waste RnD to add a product to a failing line if you couldn't even make it attractive price wise. It makes aboslute 0 value addition to BlackBerry. It is disappointing to learn that BlackBerry makes a mess of pricing each time.

    The 9720 isn't a low budget phone, it's just a OS 7.1 phone. Come on, that's not a curve!

Annoying how many armchair ceos this site has. I had no idea everybody in this forum went to school for business and at one point in their life has run a tech company.
It's a forum, educated or not, they can express their opinion. Besides, education does not guarantee sound business decisions. This topic would not exist if the company is doing well.

So you can honestly say you think people are going to buy this phone? It has nothing to do with being armchair CEOs, it has to do with not thinking anyone will buy the phone.

you sir need to rethink what forums are for. does a consumer expressing his concern about a product make him an armchair CEO. Whatever anyone speaks on these forums is basically what opinions the consumers hold and not the CEOs. And the fact remains that a CEO can not sell his product if the consumer does not find it attractive.
This "armchair CEO" bull**** comments are the lamest defence people use for BlackBerry. Everyone over here has a right to express their opinions and is actually useful feedback for BlackBerry.

You are walking down the street with a friend. A man runs by, he is naked except for a kermit the frog mask, he tries to throw his own **** at you. You turn to your friend and say "I think that guy has problems".

Your friend looks at you and says "Gee I guess you are some sort of armchair doctor - been to medical school have you?".

    $280 price tag is fine.

This is how Blackberry devices current market prices in Malaysia (average or rounded up price, retail street price without contract)

    Q10 - RM1850~RM2050 (around $610~$680)
    Z10 - RM1400~RM1700 (around $460~$560)
    Q5 - RM1000~RM1200 (around $330~$400)
    9900 - RM1099~RM1199 (around $360~$390)
    9790 - RM899~RM1000 (around $290~$330)
    9360 - RM700~RM850 (around $230~$280)

The price range doesn't translate directly to the market price in the Western part of the world, but it looks sensible somewhere else.

The prices look sensible because you're willing to pay that price. Average salary in Malaysia is $961 per month versus $3263 in the US in 2011. For you it may seem reasonable but for the average Malaysian it's expensive. I'm saying this because the 9790 is meant for the mass market. The Nokia 520 is only $163 in Malaysia so the 9790 is nearly double the price which the people here are pointing out

Does it matter what dumb name they give it? Curve, Bold, Torch, whatever, it doesn't matter. It's never going to sell at that price point.

I mean for heavens sake it costs more than a 9900, and that is a Bold!

I bet many of them can actually do better job than this stupid management. I mean how much worse can anyone do than this management? This was a top device company few years ago and now it's almost dead. You have to be wrong and screw up at every step to come to this stage.

You can get a cheap Android phone off contract for about 150 bucks and perhaps less these days. Something has definitely gone wrong at Blackberry. It's totally astounding how out of touch they have become.

More and more it looks like the only real way for BlackBerry to survive will be to get a whole new executive board. Like Nortel, the top is continuing to make bad decisions and killing what should be a successful company.

Makes you wonder if they're going for users or margin on each phone sold. I'm thinking the latter, as they must understand that they're pricing their phones too high.

Could it be that being such a small company ( compared to many others ) that they don't have the buying power that gets parts cheaper and they have higher mfg costs?

I thought the 9900 update cycle was the Q10 and BBOS was done? If people want a 9900 sell them a 9900 why bring a new 9900?

Because not all enterprise is on BES10 and some may still desire compression with cheaper data plans.

Agreed though. By releasing a legacy device now, BlackBerry is acknowledging current corporate customers lack confidence in BB10. And so does BlackBerry.

What I'm really annoyed with is members running around with a BlackBerry flag, and personally, feel the need to offer a heartfelt response for every blunder, mishap, mistake made by BlackBerry. It's not looking good for BlackBerry and the hits(mistakes) keep mounting. Psst.......no CEO badge needed, just common sense. So, pull up you boots, tights, and go forth- Defender of BlackBerry or DOB.

I've read speculation that the iPhone 5C will $0 on contract in North America and cost in the $300s for the unsubsidized price. If that is true, this 9720 has no chance. Of course, there will be interest by consumers in emerging markets because of needing BIS but there are better choices in low cost Androids, Windows Phones, and soon the iPhone5C.

I can't see many enterprises clamoring for this in the USA (it most likely won't be released here) but maybe in Canada? My company is a Fortune 500 and a year ago we had 7,000 BBs deployed and about 200 iPhones. Now there are 1,500 iPhones deployed and 5,700 BBs. If users' BB breaks, they ask for an iPhone. If it is their upgrade date, they ask for an iPhone. If anything, you would think BB would push enterprises to adopt BB10 phones instead of moving backward.
