Unlocked or not, the GSM side of the phone will not work with ANY carrier in North America.

312 is correct re using the GSM radio, but since Telus is a CDMA carrier, they may be willing to activate your 8830 on their network. Activating on CDMA is not exactly analogous to using an unlocked GSM phone on another carrier, and not all CDMA carriers will do it. Verizon and Sprint won't, but some of the smaller, regional carriers will. It won't hurt to ask.

Well, Telus isn't exactly a small carrier as it is the largest in Canada, but it couldn't hurt to ask. I'm pretty sure that because it's a cdma phone it may be more of a *bleep* to unlock but it should be possible with the powers of Google.
