Your device should be able to use Wifi, but only for the Browser. I presume the settings are identical to the Browser in the Curve.
Messages and Voice will still use the carrier network because your carrier has not implemented Unlicensed Mobile Access. When UMA is active, everything goes through Wifi, removing traffic from the carriers network.
