Question please:
I downloaded the new software to my computer.

1. I did not update the desktop just in case that's needed.
2. When I start to go through the update the wizard shows which applications
it will update. I am curious about the unselected applications and if they are needed.

I deselected the checkmark that shows applications already on the device.
Here is what it want to install and what it is not pre-selecting for install.

Questions, about the not pre-selected items
Is the MDS Runtime update required?
Is DOD Runtime Required?
Do I need to update the desktop as well?

You don't need either the MDS Runtime or DOD Root Certificates installed if you don't use them, I don't have them installed. I also unchecked the foreign languages, Blackberry Maps and Blackberry Sample Videos since I have no use for them either.
