I want to keep my 8830. I'm wondering how hard it is to replace the usb or is it just not worth it? expert opinions please! (disclaimer: I have never taken apart a BB but I have taken apart remotes and repaired them)

The USB port is soldered in, therefore, it must be de-soldered and the new one re-soldered. You can buy the port for about $6 and do it yourself, or pay a company $60+shipping to do it for you.

Or, you can just buy another 8830 for about $100.

They're good, but if you don't feel like waiting 2 weeks for it to come from Hong Kong, I've used this guy who's in the US:

Electronics Lifestyle eBay and Wholesale Consumer Electronics Goods

If you are doing it yourself....this is the part that you need:

BlackBerry Curve 8300/8310/8320/8330 OEM battery connector - Cellular Nationwide Network - Cellular

I just had my BB repaired last week...same thing...i needed a new charging port.....I paid $40 and the repair shop had it ready in one hour

I'm a pretty good solderer and I had this same issue with my last 8830. Although taking the thing apart is no biggie, removing the old solder without burning the board or destroying the circuitry is going to be complex. I actually performed it but I could never get the socket to remain founded well. It eventually broke loose again.
If your not in a shop with great tools (ie, static table, multi armed clamp device, solder sucker, mag glass, etc) I'd submit allowing the above mentioned professionals take on the job. It'll be worth your cashflow.

I might be wrong, but I thought the usb port was covered under some sort of warrenty by RIM, that's what the girl at the vzw store told me as she gave me a new 8830 when my usb port broke (twice) but that is if you guys don't mind getting a new replacement. If you wanna keep the same phone, unless you are very confident at soldering and have all the proper tools, as t0mmski said, its worth taking it and paying $40 or whatever to get replaced.
