What is the best option for me to still use the phone and my data plan? Should I try to unlock it or something? I'm really new to this type of thing. I use Verizon. I'm going there for vacation, but my company is a start up, that said, I need to be as available as I can be. I would like to have use of the phone (at the least) and BES email (preferred).

Contact Verizon about their International Plan, they should take it from there. What will be the cost of using the phone in B'dos and how much their SIM card will cost you is another matter.

Its my experience that Verizon BBs (8830) dont work in the Bahamas regardless of your plan. I may be wrong, but one of my BB users (8830 WE) is always unable to retrieve email from there. Voice works with no problem. Anyone else experience the same thing?

Unless something has changed since 1999, U.S. cell phones are illegal there.

GSM roaming (needing a sim) is NOT an option in this case. Although the Bahamas are a GSM country, they have some CDMA networks that verizon has a roaming agreement with. The coverage is questionable though--- you have to research that. If you want to use GSM there you have to get a prepaid phone there or an unlocked phone here because they are a GSM 1900 country.

By the way CDMA roaming down there with VZW is 1.29/minute and data will NOT WORK. Its voice only.

Why are U.S. cell phones illegal down there? That seems a little crazy!

Apparently they are not illegal at this time. Maybe they never were. my information came from a cruise line.
