I have a 8830 and my track ball will only work to the left and right but I am unable to move it up and down. Is there a way of resolving this problem or do I need to visit Horizon for repair?

You could probably fix it yourself by doing a search on here for removing your trackball but since the phone is still probably under warranty I would take it back to Verizon and have them fix it so that you won't void your warranty. They may just swap you out with a new phone.

True. On the RIM website, it suggests" press the ball in and force it in the direction it won't roll"

I would bring it back, and get it replaced, if its under warranty.

Although, a trackball is less than $20, and simple as anything to replace..

You could also try getting a can of air and blowing air through the sides of it before taking the whole thing apart. There are directions for this somewhere on the forum as well, if you do a search you should be able to find it easily.

The choice of returning it to Verizon, or cleaning it yourself is yours. should you decide to clean it, look here...http://forums.crackberry.com/f3/how-...rackball-3243/

When my trackball does this (only happened a couple of times) I will typically just move the trackball in a circular fashion and it dislodges whatever is hung up in the mechanism. You'll have to repeat the process several times but it has always worked for me. Don't want to void my warranty.

This probably is a bad idea but I just fixed my trackball doing the following. I tried the canned air and alcohol first. The trackball wouldn't budge. I took a very small pin and dipped it in the alcohol. Then I used the pin to circle around the trackball between the white rim and the ball. I could feel all of the grime as I gently cleaned around it. That method allowed the ball to move. Then I took a q tip and dipped it in the alcohol. I cleaned the ball thoroughly using the previously stated method. I'm sure I took a big chance using the pin but it allowed me to get the trackball free so that it could be cleaned properly.
You can bet I will be cleaning the trackball at least weekly now. I was in a panic when I couldn't use my Berry!!!

    1. Spray a decent amount any alcohol based deodorant on a flint free cotton cloth like a handkerchief or Napkin
    2. Hold the phone face down (To avoid the liquid from entering the phone and to let the debris onside get out)
    3. Wrap the sprayed part of the cloth around your index finger and gently press the trackball with the cotton cloth and roll it in all directions
    4. Spray more deodorant on the cloth if it gets dry and also press harder if it doesn't start rolling properly. Could take a couple of minutes or more depending on the amount of debris inside.

Works like a charm! Hope this helps!

If it happens again, you can take the track-ball out. It'll void your warrenty, but really they won't know.

Pry off the chrome ring lightly.
    Use tweezers to remove track-ball.
    Clean with alcohol based solution.
    Replace track-ball and chrome ring.

As long as you take your time, VZ will never know you did this.

I actually bought a used 8830 that arrived yesterday, and the ball was doing the same thing you are describing. When I went into the Verizon store to activate it, the lady installed a new ball for free. I didn't even ask her. She just popped out the old one with her nail, and popped a new one in. Works real well now.

One quick and cheap fix I've used many times...

Find a desk calendar or other similar clean paper area. Turn your bb face down and with just a little pressure, roll it in circles, up and down, and in the direction it has trouble with. You can usually hear the difference as it begins to clean up. The oils from your hands and dust and gunk get in there all the time and this seems to clean it off quickly, and for no cost.
