Go to the ringer Profiles
Select an alert (Vibrate, Quite, Normal..), the screen will close
Select the ringer Profiles again and this time *scroll down to Advanced*
Select the alert you previously chose
** Your options will now display (SMS, MMS, Phone, Messenger..) and you can change the alerts.

I'd been going into the Wrench icon all these past days and with the help of your forum, I FINALLY figured it out. Thanks!

I am using this model and cannot hear any sounds when I get an SMS text. It vibrates and blinks only. I have adjusted all the settings as described above and checked to ensure all the profiles are set to vibrate + tone.

Is there some button that mutes all sounds? Could that be it? Thanks

You have either missed some setting in Profiles, or you have ringtones stored on SD card and the one assigned to SMS is missing. Here is the Profile screenshot from my phone (tone-only, not vibe+tone):
