I know that you cannot use AT&T sim cards with the 8830, but is this because of the software or hardware?

If it is the software, could you install an OS for an AT&T BB on the 8830?

Its the radio in the device. It is hardware,not software related.

The GSM radio in an 8830 only works on European GSM frequencies, not North American. As fumbalah said, it's a hardware issue. In addition, you can only install an OS that matches the hardware. So an 8820 OS would not work on an 8830, for example.
