    I've seen some memory cards that have wifi also. Is this, or something else, a possible solution to adding wifi to the 8830?

    Yes and no. There are MicroSD cards that have WiFi built into them, but the issue is that the RIM OS doesn't support such cards (cuz they blow). These type of cards work great on WinMo platform. So, physically yes, but software support, no. Bummer, I know.
