I Just bought an 8830 off EBAY and need to use it in Sweden. I have an old GSM AT&T phone so I took the SIM card from this phone and put it in the 8830 but it does recognize the card as valid. Now I realize that the GSM frequencies are not compatible with US carriers, but I figured the phone should at least read a SIM card from a US a carrier, but maybe I am wrong.

When I look at Advanced Options->SIM and type ‘MEPD’, I see the following:

    Network: UNKNOWN
    Network Subset: UNKNOWN
    Service Provider: UNKNOWN
    Corporate: UNKNOWN

Also, when I go into the address book and select ‘SIM Phone Book’, I see an error: “Error accessing SIM”

Is this expected until I put in a SIM card from an oversees provider?

    Can anyone help?

Are you sure the SIM card is not faulty?

I am positive the SIM card is not faulty. The card works fine in the original phone that it was in. Now the original phone is not a smart phone, don't know if that matters or not. The other thing to mention is that the phone that I got the SIM card from is a NET10 phone but they use AT&T network. I don't know if that matters or not.
