1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. It's 4.3, found Here
2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded. (Choose the 8820)
3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
4. Plug in BB and Open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.
Have some patience, this could take an hour to complete. DO NOT unplug the device until it is finished!
Same for me I am used to using a windows mobile device and each Rom is usually significantly different. Thus, far I can't say the same with blackberries
My 8820 is one year old, is a UK version, using Orange Europe as the carrier. Is it necessary or possible for me to upgrade the OS to 4.5 (which presumably will be on all new Blackberries soon?). What advanatges would I have? I realise there is a full HTML browser / functionality but I already have Opera Mini. Is it worth my spending an hour on the upgrade, with the possibility that the machine might crash or is the upgrade recommended by RIM? Gary
I have an 'American' 8820 with 4.2.2.169 (Platform 2.4.067).
I have Desktop Manager 4.3 installed, and it has communicated with my 8820. I downloaded and installed this OS version, deleted the .xml file, re-connected the BB, started BBDM and it does not prompt me to update the device.

I'm not an expert, but i think you need to upgrade to Desktop Manager v 4.5
I installed desktop manager 4.5 and my software version is 4.2.2.160 but it doesn't prompt me to upgrade. The point is it has the software provided by my carrier. Can I upgrade it manually to the officially provided release?
