i had this issue on my first 8830 as well. Didn't really think much of it at the time, I just figured I was pressing too hard on the scroll wheel. Now that I have my 2nd one, this does not happen anymore, no matter how quick or hard I press on the scroll wheel. Since this is identical to what was happening to me (and my last BB was defective, wouldn't charge properly, just kept hard resetting itself over and over), I would think this was a defect and that it's going to be the same across several devices that they have shipped. I would take it back and complain and get a new one. If you get any guff, ask to see a manager and complain that you shouldnt be paying hundreds for a device that has a faint discoloration on a normal function (using the trackball). My 2 cents...
do you tihkn it will get worse over time or is tihs somehting i can just learn to live with?
couldnt tell you myself, i only had my first one for a day before exchanging it. it seemed to get slighttlly worse over that first day, but not by much, although it was happening more often as the day went on. if you're worried, i would just go exchange it if i were you.
Was the device sitting in a cold area? I use to have this on my Nokia 6682. Nonetheless, if it persists, exchange it...
verizon will never replace the phone for how small the discoloration is
