I am BRAND NEW to this whole bb thing, but I am already in love with it. I have the World Edition blackberry that I purchased from a friend, I tried to download blackberry messenger a number of ways, but it continues to tell me its not compatable. I dont have the usb connector, is there any way to download it via the phone?
The blackberry mobile site is what told me I needed to download version 4.0 or 4.1..?

Before anything else, you'll need to upgrade your OS. I'm not sure what the latest 8830 OS for VZW is but here is the latest known leaked OS. Beyond that, I don't know if there is a BBM 5.0 for your phone, though the Curve version MIGHT work as both are OS 4.5. Here are the OTA and Desktop links for BBM 5.0

You might want to think about going up to OS 4.5, it will add things like HTML, streaming (youtube) and some other improvements. The OS install will also install BBM for you.

Im just confused as to whether or not I can do any of these things via phone, and not computer, because I dont have the usb, i mean i could always go buy one, but can I do any of this if I dont have the USB connector for my desktop

Does your phone have the Wireless Upgrade option? Options > Advanced Options > Wireless Upgrade

Or, I'm pretty sure they can upgrade you to the newest VZW OS at the store.

Youll want a usb cable for the future anyways, not only being able to charge, but to be able to back up your phone.

no wireless upgrade option, i think youre right, im off to the verizon store.
