I recently bought a regular headphone jack to mini headphone jack adaptor. I plug it in and music would not play. It would continue to play through the phone instead of the headphones.

Is there any way to make this work?

I believe so. There were a bunch of threads about the 8830 headphone connector when the phone was new. Not all adapters work, but some do. If you search this forum for "2.5 mm adapter," you should find a discussion of adapters that work.

I bought and returned numerous adapters that didn't work until I bought the one manufactured by Seidio and it works like a charm.

I bought mine at bberry.com but you can buy direct from Seidio too.

The cheap 99 cent one from ebay doesn't work neither. It only plays out of one ear bud
