I've been told that I need to download some MMS software to be able to view pictures that are sent via text.....is this correct? If so, where would I go to find that? I get them just fine through email and can see everything on the web....it's only those text messages with video and pictures that I can't get.

Just a couple of questions:
What carrier are you using?
Can you send pictures to other people?
Do you receive any error messages?
These are just some basic questions to help start the troubleshooting.

If you are on sprint, with OS 4.5 you should be able to send MMS, but when MMS messages are sent to you, you can only receive them via sprint's picture mail. This is a problem on sprint's network that I don't think they have any interest in fixing.
This is the same for verizon
