I will be moving to europe and planning on subscribing to a european blackberry service

can i utilize my 8830 for this? My service with verizon will be canceled before I move.

You'll have to get your phone unlocked and then buy a European sim card, but I believe that will work. My coworkers in Europe have a sim card through the carrier they want, and then they buy the phone they want.
