A friend gave me his old Sprint 8830 WE. I'm going to travel to Europe and plan on plugging in local carrier SIMs once I get there. Do I even need to sign up for Sprint service at all?

Is there anyway to use blackberry email if I don't sign up with Sprint?

You will be able to have the phone unlocked. Either your friend can get an unlock code from Sprint, or you can purchase one from one of the unlockers here in the Unlocking forum.

Once it is unlocked, you will be able to purchase a prepaid SIM card from a carrier in the country you are visiting. You will not need Sprint service to use the phone in Europe. Many European carriers offer prepaid BIS, so you will be able to get data if you purchase a prepaid BIS SIM card.

Your friend will need to contact Sprint to release the PIN.

hi! I have the same problem. I got a used BB 8830 and i wanna use it in Belgium. But mine is from verizon. I put the sim in and it says activation required. What does that mean? what do I have to do? Is there any way to solve this without contacting verizon?
    Thanks!
