This is link to the instructions. (I can't post URLs! on Crackberry!) The Bluetooth requirments for the Laptop state "Windows native Bluetooth". My Laptop in an HP and must have some 3rd party Bluetooth software as "My Bluetooth Places" come up to configure. According to the guide, this is why it's not working...ugh.

OK verified, it is the Broadcom Chipset.
I downloaded the latest to be sure:
- Device software updated from VZW site for full 4.2 support
- DM downloaded to be sure, it's version 4.2.2.12 which stills Mar 19 2007 in the "About" box despite the VZW website stating a May 31, 2007. All 620 meg...

Results? No change. DM will not allow Bluetooth to be selected.

When pairing the device with the laptop, the handsfree service is enabled.

I'm going to search the HP site to see if there is an update to the Bluetooth software.

Downloaded and installed HP Bluetooth update, no soap. I guess I'll have to uninstall the Braodcom software and revert to the native Windows BLuetooth stack or...I'll just wait for my new laptop and give that a try!

STOP DOWNLOADING FROM THE VERIZON SITE!!! That's why you're not getting what I'm telling you to get. Go to RIM's website (BlackBerry) and download the Desktop Manager from there. It's version 4.2.2.14 dated Apr 07. Then go here Broadcom Corporation - Bluetooth Software Download and download the Broadcom chipset stack/drivers. If you have both of these and you still have issues, then it's user error.

I love the tether, and was surprised to see how well it worked with my tablet.
I did not have to resort to using it until this week because I have wireless in my house, though I now find myself in a condo with zero internet (1800 a week, you would think it would come with something).
Not only has the tether out performed my expectations, but I have now ridden over 600 miles in a car without loosing signal (NY to Virginia beach).

My only problem is that you can't use the internet on your computer and the blackberry at the same time. Sometimes when getting software online it gives you a link to use on your blackberry to download, so I have to loose the internet on the computer to access the site and download. But its only a problem because I am really lazy.

All in all...worth the extra $$ a month.

I got the basic 450 minutes (to start) plus data plan as I ramp up my RE business. I asked if that included unlimited data for the tethered modem and she said yes.

So what's this $15 per month that others are paying?

I had the $39/mo plan before and I'd hate to think that it $40/mo more just for e-mail! And, another $15 on top of that?

BTW, all the renates and new every 2 got the phone down to $99!

Nope..the agent I spoke with was misinformed. VZW offered to take it back and cancel the contract. Since there is no other choice appealing to me, I now pay the $15 per month. It works perfectly and I see no need ever for a wireless WAN card that costs ~$80 per month.

I found a forum that has actual instructions on how to install the 8830 Modem and use it tethered... This article was prepared by Mark Rejhon at BlackberryForums-com. I don't know him and am no expert so I can't answer any questions, you can contact him on that forum if you have problems. I'm pasting the instructions below, good luck! I was surprised at how easy it was. I found this article the other day and am currently using the modem as I type to you. Seems to be very effective and throughput doesn't seem to be an issue. I know it's a little late, but better late than never... Here goes!

This is not spam or anything funky so please trust me.... I have VZAccess Manager Installed so when the modem connected, VZAccess Manager opened and the modem connected. A side note ... I also have the $15 plan with Verizon, but VZAccess Manager has two connections now "National Access" and "Blackberry Modem". :NationalAccess" is the $15 plan and the "Blackberry Modem" should be free since the connection is different... I haven't canceled the $15 plan yet but I plan to soon.. as soon as I'm sure I'm totally happy with it....

I went to tether it to my computer and the only thing I needed to do was to set up the tether modem program and call *U.S. Cellular for my internet APN. Once that was done I could use the internet. With *U.S. Cellular you can tether your BlackBerry without additional charges. If possible I would recommend switching to *U.S. Cellular. My dad has been with them since 1991 and is and always has been happy with the service. They are less scamey that Verizon and get ALOT better cell phone coverage. The only thing I don't like about U.S. cellular is that they don't have as many phones as Verizon to choose from. They do carry the BlackBerry 8830 World Edition. *U.S. Cellular rocks!!!

With Sprint, your call will come through or you can place a call. It will pause your internet connection (can't change to new internet page) until you end the call, but after call it allows you to continue on the internet.

I have US Cellular and never had to make one call for any APN. I just followed the instructions here:

I'm trying to do the same thing, as I just got my 8830. I never had to do this with my Treo - just connected right up without any hassle, and wasn't aware there were any charges.

That's ridiculous because it's impossible for you to use both the internet on the blackberry and on the laptop at the same time, so adding another charge onto that is not fair and should be changed to be part of the already unlimited data plan we subscribe to. Maybe if enough of us get up a petition and threaten to boycott this crap, they'll listen to their subscribers.

I'm seriously thinking of either going back to my treo, or going to another carrier if that's the way it's going to be. I really don't want to do that, but tethering my laptop to the internet when I am abroad is a feature that is a must for me, as I travel all of the time and there's not always an internet connection where I am.

Looks like Verizon has found a way to derail the tethered homemade configuration. I just found specific instructions on how to do so, and when I pulled up what looked like was going to be the web page, I got a nice little message from Verizon saying "this feature is not available with your account, please call Verizon support to get the broadband feature added to your account", or something like that.

I could understand if this was an issue where I was using both screens at once, but I don't; it's impossible. I'm either using the blackberry's internet, or my laptop's internet - never both at the same time. I think it's a rip-off to have to pay extra. This reminds me of when wireless and high-speed internet first came out. The companies were actually trying to charge people for each computer in the house that would access the internet on a monthly basis. This turned out to be a joke, and people circumvented it (and justifyably so, IMHO), and the companies realized they didn't have a plan to adapt to that, so they scrapped the whole plan and marketed other products/services.

It's not fair for us to have to pay extra just to use our phone to get to the internet. I could understand if I was downloading mega-porn and constantly downloading data, but I don't, and they could easily throttle the bandwidth of a user who does do such things. I use my laptop and blackberry for business and school, and I need a connection that I can trust, wherever I am. I don't want to have to rely on whether where I am at has a connection, and/or whether it's going to be a connection that I happen to have an account with. This is a fleece of consumers who pay the unlimited internet fee already in their plan, and paying extra is monopolistic at the very least.

I say we all get together and create some sort of coalition to get Verizon and other companies to squash this ridiculous fee and allow us to use our existing unlimited plans to tether to out laptops. It's not like we're using twice the connection - it's one or the other, so why should we have to pay extra when it's not requiring Verizon to do anything extra on their part to provide the very same services we're using on our units?

Sorry, I had to vent. I just don't feel this is fair at all, and never did, even when I was with Cingular. I left Cingular for a whole different reason (brand new Treo or so I thought was literally glued together on the inside and sold to me as new).

Anybody got any ideas? At the very least I am going to write some letters, and keep writing them if that's what it takes. I'm no stranger to BBB complaint letters, and I'm quite ruthless when it comes to fighting battles that I feel are justified. I'm not bragging, just stating that I fiercely defend what I feel is right, and when companies take advantage of people, I stand up and say something about it with the pen, and so far, every case I've fought has come to a positive outcome. I'm just not sure how to approach this one yet.

If you made it to the end of this post, thanks for reading, and let me know what you think. It can be done, it's just a matter of numbers. If the numbers are on our side, Verizon WILL change their policy, especially if they feel they have something to lose when it comes to a customer base of a large number of subscribers who are upset about this issue.

When using the 8830 as a tethered modem via bluetooth, and a call comes in. You can answer it just fine. All the while still tethered. No problems at all.

Unrelated though - my tethered data connection terminates at the 4 minute point every time. No idea why.

i have the pearl 8130 and i can make and recieve calls when tethered or connected by bluetooth and using the internet. what happens is it stops accessing the net you take or place your call, then once you hang up your connection to the net is restored. at least that is how my verizon access does.

There are two programs that are great, they use the TCP stack or the BES/MDS data plans you already pay for (works best if you have the unlimited data plan). For both of them you install an app on your BB and the PC you wish to connect to the internet. They are both compatible with BB Pearl thru Storm (I use the Storm).

The first one is MobiShark Shark Modem, [mobishark.com] you get a 10 MB free trial (goes real fast), then must pay 49.95 to continue using it, but you do not need to pay for the "tether" charges companies such as Verizon charge (which if you read the fine print it is limited to 5 Gigs of data per month then extra charges apply)! With shark modem you do need to configure your internet programs to use a proxy, which is documented in the user manual.

The second one is called TetherBerry [tetherberry.com](I am using it right now), it is a tad bit slower (about 25kb/s) than shark modem, but fast enough for general browsing, e-mail, and youtube... larger file streams do slow down a bit (Hulu streamed but the shows would stop to buffer every 5 minutes). TetherBerry has a free trial, which hasn't expired on me yet (lasts 7 days)(165.99 MB xfer so far.) and also costs 49.95 to purchase. TetherBerry has versions for Win XP thru Windows 7 (Both 32 and 64 bit versions) and Mac. The thing I like most about Tetherberry is: you install the software on the BB and laptop then go, no configuring needed (well you do need to tell the BB side to use Direct or BES), but that is it.

Hi, I recently bought a unlocked 8830 from eBay. When I insert my active GSM sim card,it asks me to activate and then connects me to Verizon automated machine who then asks to pay I do not want to be affiliated to them in any way.I want a phone which I only insert a GSM sim card and be connected directly. What is the issue? I am lost.

The question is HOW DO I ACTIVATE WITHOUT BEING CONNECTED TO VERIZON WIRELESS? Please help. Thanks!
