I realize the backlight is for powersaving purposes, but is there any way I can get it to full strength on one push or is it default to have to push the upper left hand button twice? Any one know of a workaround or utility?

"...push the upper left hand button twice", what button are you talking about? The device is set automatically. Check

If you push the power button "the upper left hand button" he's talking about it goes full blast.
To turn off the "auto light based on light sensor" go to Options/Screen and Keyboard and turn off "Automatic Backlight".

You can probably find an app in the app world that does that.
