8830WE in South Africa
Worked great. Had to reboot once when I got an SOS after coming out of a dead zone after on safari in the bush. Vodofone was the local carrier. Emails came through fine and was a godsend since free internet is largely lacking. Used SMS mainly and while my sister, who is with MTN, and not problem replying, my two sons, one on Vodofone and the other on Virgin were unable to respond - my guess is restrictions on their local accounts? They could call me no problem, but no SMS. I had caller ID while in SA, which I don't have back here in Canada. Will now wait to get the bill to see if it was all worth it!

world addition
I have brought my 8830 over to KZN South Africa numerous times and have never been able to get the data to work. Calls work fine, but tethering and data packages never seem to work.
Any ideas?

No restrictions on data roaming from your carrier?
