I have gone into messenger and followed the steps to add a contact and either they don't receive the request or if they do and accept, it still doesn't register on my end. Any tips with messenger?

It will register if they accept it only. If not, it won't register.

You will just see their PIN until they accept, how do you know their accepting?
Does their PIN not change into their Username??

I've sat next to a co worker, sent him a request, he accept and not be posted on my messenger. BB said to just delete the person and to try again. ??? Some work, some don't....

i heard that if you send the request via PIN it works better than trying to send the request via email.
