8830 a good blackberry?

ok so i have a 8330 curve that took a dip in coke last night and isnt doing so well right now. was a one in a million landing right into a cup full of coke. now theres tons of 8830s on ebay for like 100-150. Is this a good phone? most of the features of the curve?


another question is that im with alltel and i live in danville va which is supposed to switch to at&t here soon. so im debating on just getting a cheap phone until then so i dont have to buy another phone when they switch.

what do you guys think?

At one time, my husband daughter and I all had 8830s. Two of us had to get replacement phones because of charging port problems. My husband had to have his changed 3 times. They never questioned changing them, but it was a pain having to get everything set back up. Otherwise it was a good phone. I didn't like that you couldn't take pictures and get MMS.

I think 100-150 is wayyyyyyyyy too much for that phone if you are buying off ebay with no warranty.

The 8830 won't work on AT&T, so if you buy it, you'll have to buy another when you switch carriers. The 8830 has 64 mb memory, compared to 96 mb in the 8330, and no camera. It also will not run OS 5. The 8330 will. All that said, the 8830 is a very good phone for what it is. It's robust, boots up very quickly compared to the Tour, and gets reasonably good battery life.

I had an 8830 for almost two years which I passed onto my daughter. It's a very nice phone, if, as noted above, somewhat limited now. I think the OS stopped at 4.5, so it won't be getting upgrades. It's also a world phone, though it only has two European frequencies. It worked very well for us in Europe.

well when are they planning on switching? does anybody know?


the phone is working well now. i took it completely apart and alcoholed the entire thing. the only problem is that the lcd is a little splotchy with white colored backgrounds.

i agree 100 is to much for a phone that they aren't even producing anymore i found half a dozen on ebay last week for 30 shipping included. but it is a great phone i love mine.

I loved mine....i just did not like the fact that it did not have a camera for a phone that cost $400+ at the time I bought it out right

No it's not a good blackberry. Problems up the wazoo with file free. Look at the Tour2 or the 8530.

I can run OS 5.0 with a hybrid? Does that count?

I'm not aware of any OS 5.0 hybrid for the 8830. RIM has announced they won't release OS 5 versions for 64 MB devices because they don't have sufficient memory to run it, so I'd be surprised if a hybrid is available for the 8830.

That is pretty funny.

I got the 8330 Hybrid to run on my 8830. It was a few modules that had the 5.0 version. Most were still using 4.5. The browser was 5.0 as well.

I would be even more surprised to learn you were running any 8330 OS on an 8830. But if it works for you, that's fine. It doesn't change the fact that RIM isn't releasing OS 5.0 for the 8830. But if you can get some of the benefits, that's good.

Yeah there was a thread a while back in this sub forum about the hybrid OS.

I'm on my 3rd 8830WE and I actually need to reload it with the Hybrid since the chirp on 4.5.0.175 and .169 really sucks.
