OK, great, now you've just verified that this is indeed a bug with the software. It's on my list of issues with the release that slipped (big slip) by RIM's programmers.

Should I really trust downloading this? There seems to be an equal number of pros and cons. Also, if for some reason this F's up my BB, can I go back to the 4.2 OS?

Yes, you can always downgrade back to what you have now. If you're ok with loading OSs and know your way around a BB fairly well, you can try it. If you're an average user who just wants a working BB and depends upon it working 100% of the time perfectly, you might want to way for an official carrier release.

^^^just send your service books again then you can receive html emails. Once your get the email with the html images, hit the menu > get images.
