I am very, very new to BB. I connect wirelessly to Outlook and show to have 17,000 messages on my BB when i try to synch or backup (which takes more than 2 hours). I don't have a clue what I am doing wrong.

I also show every task (unless I hide the completed ones) that I've ever done. Thousands of those bad boys all the way back to 2002. Help!

Right now I have the incessant hourglass that won't go away to even allow me to access Options to wipe the BB and start over.

are you on a BES?
One other thing you could do is Archive all your items in Outlook and then sync your BB.
But if you are doing this on a work computer you should be notified to archive your outlook at least once a month. THAT would solve the issues you are dealing with
