    ....that is the question?

    I just purchased the 8830 through Verizon(after 8/2/07). Do I still need to upgrade its software to the BlackBerry Device Software v4.2 (updated 8-2-2007) that is available on the Verizon website?

    It all depends on what version you have on your blackberry, its best to upgrade if you have a lower version.

    ...here, here, Mattmarenic! During the upgrade, do a backup. That way, if anything happens, you can revert, and there would be no data lost.
