Have you tried a hard reset by pulling the battery out, while the device is power on, then reinserting?

How old is the phone? Did you buy it new, used? How much memory is free? What OS version is on it?

For some stange reason people have started to get this more this week than ever. I bet it's a Yahoo software / update that people are doing that's causing this...

Nonetheless, you've done the right thing, reloading the OS. Plus you probably got the latest version of OS from your respective carrier...

Isn't a hard reset different than a wipe?

Yes it is with RIM, A Wipe HandHeld disables all data services (web browsing, email, etc.) and removes all data (passwords, contacts, etc.) from the device.
Before clearing the handheld, ensure there is a recent backup of the data

A hard reset involves physically removing the battery from the smartphone and then reinserting it.

Normally a Hard reset completely wipes the phone and a Soft reset is pulling the battery, RIM likes to be different
