    Hi,

My name is Cody and this is my story on my 8830 with Verizon.........

Last night I finally got the approval from our store, I could upload my BB with the new software update from verizon. The new update from verizon is 4.2.2.174 - this update included several new options for my phone including the new ringer boost!!!! After I down loaded the new software I check out how well my ringer worked, to my surprise after an hour of messing with this program nothing was different..
I called Verizon and I was on hold + talk time for about 38mins, after they asked me several question about the phone they determined that it was nothing they could fix so they put me in contact with BB!
This is part of the story I wanted to go to the Nutt House and go crazy!!!! I can't believe that I was on hold with BB support for about 1h 23min - Finally to my surprise I heard a voice asking me what problems I had with my BB; I said thanks to her and said their is a god!
I told here my story, she was very clear with me at first and told me she was sorry for the wait and we'll see if we can fix the problem. She had me do a new reset on my BB desk top and down load the software again (They say that if you do new software that it will require a reset on your BB) - not true! This is were it all goes wrong, after an hour loading my BB all over she wanted me to go to options to find out what software was loaded up on my BB. I go threw the steps to find out that my BB loaded the old software which was 4.2.2.143 - I believe!
After I read the software to her, she told me that we had loaded the wrong program and we would have to through the hole process again - 2h later we finally got me all booted up, she told me to set my BB on high ringer and she would call. She called and again to my surprise the phone ringer was still the same volume! I told her that it was the same volume as before and she had me check the options to see if the right software loaded - which it did - 4.2.2.174. She had me put my phone up to my work phone and do a test in volume compared to the audio player - she said there was a difference between the two but she the hole problem of my call was that I couldn't hear my volume at all - this is when I started to slam my work phone on the desk (The keyboard is covering the damage)!
I work around loud Diesel Trucks all day and its hard to hear my ringer at all and I have it set on Calypso because its the loudest and most annoying ringer on the phone - hence annoying - my workers give me a bad time about the ring tone!
After I slammed my phone on the desk I told her the reason why I was calling again, she finally understood the problem that It's not that you can't hear the ringer it's just not load enough compared to the audio player on the BB. I asked her to put somebody that knew of the problem. This gentleman informed me that BB is trying to fix the problem so that the volume on the ringer is as loud as the audio player, he also informed me on this last software issue was not clear and it was not suppose to have in the details that theirs is a ringer boost - there is no ringer boost in the 4.2.2.174 software!
After a total of 4h 13min I finally hung up the phone and shook my head in disgust. The gentleman did tell me that BB and Verizon are working on it and the next software update will include the ringer boost! - I won't hold my breath but I might cross my fingers!

I hope this story helps out the fellow BB members of the process it takes to find information out! I know a lot about these 8830 so if there is any question I'll be glad to answer if I can!

    Thanks

Did they ever solve the problem with the volume. I had a concern about this as well. You really can't hear any of the ringtones other than the Calypso.

The fix that your indicating is for ringer volume that is stuck on low all the time even if you have it on high, medium, or low, it never changes! Thats the link you sent which fixes that problem. The problem I'm talking about is the volume isn't loud enough on the loudest. They wont have this problem fixed for awhile - thanks for you post and link though.

They haven't fixed the problem yet! I know it sucks because I have 90 ring tones that I want to use for when my friends ring me or the boss and I can't use any of them because I can't hear them! If I hear anything I will write it on this post. Thanks for the reply!!!!

No one has this new release yet. I looked at all the carrier downloads and this is not listed on any of them.

The other carriers should be coming out with it pretty soon, since RIM acknowledge they have corrected the issue.

That's my point, there are no carriers that currently have this release. I'm crossing my fingers that one of them will get the update so I can load it. What the fix really needed to be is the ability for the 8830 to play it's ringtones via stereo just like Media Player does, which currently it doesn't. Let's hope they did this and not just take the cheap way out. Loudness is one thing, but the quality of the ringtone is another aspect of this issue as well. Currently not only does it ring soft, but the sound quality also sucks.

This is kind of an 8830 issue. Could also happen on an 8800, but most complainers are the ones with 8830s.

Bro I feel you pain, that is one reason I got rid of the 8830, 1. with contacting my AGO and filing a complaint with them and speaking with verizon higher up people, I explain 1. false advertising the 8830 with GPS and other apps, but i will not get into that , I explained that i could not here the ringer and it was not worth the price of the phone, the pearl rings allot better now. would not go back to the 8830. but good luck to you. I really hope they fix it, cause they have been saying a fix is in for the while now....

I have a Cellular South 8830 and my ringtone volume is superb! I'm running 4.2.2.176, which I downloaded from Telus while unlocking vendor themes. Even with my body skin, it's loud and even louder when I'm playing media. I'm just using one of the standard BB ringtones.

This is what they said: obviously.. the ringer volume still sucks.. they said it was posted back in August.. Let's see if there is a newer update that comes out soon.

Thank you for contacting our Verizon Wireless website. We are happy to assist you with your question regarding the ringtone update.

The update on our website addresses the ringer issue you are experiencing. It provides a 6dB boost in volume for audio notifications to resolve missing alerts while the 8830 is holstered while providing the enhancements listed below:

Resolves the inability to use data after having left the handset on while leaving a GSM area broad or turning the handset and/or it's cellular radio off when no GSM signal was present abroad. This previously required that the battery be removed and reinserted before it could reestablish data connectivity in a CDMA coverage area.

Resolves the loss of phone functionality after using the call waiting function to answer an incoming call while currently on a call.

Resolves multiple issues with acquiring network connectivity while in GSM mode.

Resolves three identified Calendar issues that were previously addressed with a patch. Detailed information about the Calendar issues can be found at this link:
deleted url.. don't have 10 posts yet

Enables the SIM to be unlocked for the use of non-Verizon Wireless SIM Cards for voice and data service on GSM/GPRS networks abroad. Note: Requires account to have been in good standing for previous 60 days and Verizon Wireless does not provide any support for using third-party SIM while roaming on any GSM/GPRS networks.

Adds support for A2DP and AVRCP Bluetooth profiles which adds compatibility with stereo Bluetooth headsets.

Improves the usability of the keyboard by not using backlighting in low-to-medium lighting conditions which previously made keys difficult to read.

Corrects an issue that resulted in "Error 348" on the 8830.

Before installing the handheld software the BlackBerry Desktop Manager must be installed. The BlackBerry Desktop Manager needs to be the same version as the Handheld Software. The BlackBerry cradle or USB cable must be connected directly to the desktop / laptop and not through a docking station / port replicator or USB hub.

Warning: It is critical that the computer used during installation is not allowed to enter stand-by, hibernate, or suspend mode. Failure to prevent this will result in a failed install and possible permanent damage to the device. Please also ensure that your information is backed up prior to performing the update as the information on the device may be deleted during the update.

    1. Close any open applications.
Verify the Blackberry Desktop Manager is not running in the Windows System Tray (located in the bottom right-hand corner).
    2. Go to the site and download the handheld Software.
    3. Enter the 10-digit mobile number and select the appropriate Blackberry Handheld software for the device.
    4. Click Start Download and save the file to the Windows desktop or other known location.
    5. Double-click the downloaded file to begin the installation.
    6. Click OK.
    7. Click Next.
    8. Select USA (English), then click Next.
    9. To continue the installation, select I accept the terms in the license agreement then click Next.
    10. Select Yes, I want to start the Desktop Manager Software, and click Finish to complete installation.
    11. Launch BlackBerry Desktop Manager by selecting: Start > Programs (All Programs) > Blackberry > Desktop Manager then connect the BlackBerry to the PC with the cable / cradle.
    12. The Application Updates Available window will appear. Select Update Now.
If the window does not appear, open the Application Loader.
    13. Click Next.
    14. If prompted, enter the Handheld Security Password, then click Next.
    15. Select the applications to be updated or installed, then click Next.
    16. Select Automatically back up the handheld application data... (Recommended), then click Next.
    17. Click Finish to begin the upgrade.
    18. The Application Loader Wizard will display a window showing the status of the update.
Time of system upgrade may range from 20 minutes to a full hour. During this time, the Blackberry display screen will be blank. Do not unplug the device during the upgrade operation.
    19. Click Close.

Use something else as a ringtone and you'll see the problem. The goons at RIM thought it would be a good idea to "fix" the ringtone volume issue by just boosting the volume of the standard ringtones. Genius, I know...

Just to let everybody know one more time........ there is no software update that will fix the 8830 ring volume from verizon! I don't know about other carriers.

The latest update for verizon on the 8830 is: 4.2.2.176

It doesn't do much to fix any problems on the phone.
