Yes, PIN messages are blackberry to blackberry messages. Carrier makes no difference. Both devices only need a data plan.

Also, on her Pearl, her name / user ID she choose for the BlackBerry Pin Messenger, MUST only have characters, no spaces, and 'funny' items. If it does, it will not work correctly. I've tested it, in particular Pearls allow you to enter anything, but don't always work. On the Curve (and other similar one's) if you enter something 'funny' as your name / user ID, it will tell you, you can't use it...
