I am having a problem with my blackberry 8830 freezing up about 1-2x a day (screen goes black, red indicator light remains on)

This is not the problem relating to the call waiting lock-up that has been discussed.

I really can't pinpoint the problem but it certainly has really only become an issue after I installed the VZW hardware update.

Anyone else having this problem?

Not me personally cause I don't have VZW, but have you tried reloading the OS just to see if it was possibly a bad install?
