Right now, the max miscrosdhc card a BlackBerry 8830 can run is 4GB, which is why your 8830 turned the 8GB card into a 4GB card.
When RIM makes their OS 4.5 update available, you'll be able to upgrade your BlackBerry's operating system to this new version for free, and that will enable you to use the full 8GB on the card.
I think as it stands right now, only the new Pearls (8110, 8120, 8130) that are shipping with OS version 4.3 can run the cards bigger than 4GB (6GB and 8GB). The release should be out sooner than later (hopefully next two months) so you can probably just hold onto the card. I **think** reformatting it once you have the updated operating system should make it into an 8GB card again. I say *think* because I haven't been able to test that yet myself and haven't dug into this issue before in the forums (has maybe been addressed elsewhere already). So if anybody else can shed some light on that (can you restore a microsdhc card that's been made smaller by BBOS limitations) that would be awesome....
