All of a sudden the "description" above the five icons on my main screen are no longer there. Has this happened to anyone else, and if so how do I get them back?

Did you change the theme, or wallpaper? Either way, try a battery pull (take the battery out while the Blackberry is on). See what happens then...

hey thanks! this helped my problem too! my issue was that it was telling me that I have a new "IM" message... but I don't use IM on my BB... only BB Msg. I did a batter pull and the notification went away!
