I bought mine used (vzw) on my 8830 and it was acting funny, I just took it to a store when reloading the os didn't fix it, and they wiped and reloaded it for me and it worked like a champ untill I bought a curve. So you may see if a local store can do it for you.

I'm not sure if you have tried to use JL Commander to wipe the handheld clean and re-loaded the OS. If you haven't, you may want to try that.
