    Hello,

OK, after all you guys help I decided to go with an 8700. (8700c quad GSM/EDGE)

However, they sent me an 8700v.

I never heard of the 8700v so i looked it up.. The only info I could fine on it was at RIM's EU webpage:

    BlackBerry - BlackBerry 8700v smartphone

There it says it's only dual-band, but is that actually true, or do they only bother to write that info for EU users.

(Just trying to avoid having to ship this unit back and find a new vendor...)

    Than you,

Have you tried popping your SIM in and seeing if it works yet?

No... I don't have the SIM card, and wont for a few days.

Is there any way to tell via the menus if it's quad-band GSM/EDGE?

Looking at the wikipedia article, it looks like you mean the 8707v, which supports the following:

    850/900/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS
    2100 MHz UMTS
If it's unlocked, it MAY work. Also, if you don't have a SIM, how did you use your 7290?

EDIT: And yes, that says GPRS, not EDGE.

    I definitely mean the 8700v, not 8707v.

This phone is actually for someone else, and I have not gotten his old Cingular 7290 from him to do the swap yet. (I use Verizon, so I have no SIM to even test with.)
