What's your take on this? The 4.2 software for the T-Mobile 8700g has been spoken about forever and a day. But, since we now have the likes of 8100 (Pearl) and now the 8800, would it even be worth having it on the 8700?

True enough - I like the interface better on the newer software. True enough the media portion was written for the Pearl and the 8800 however, on the 8700 you do feel a bit like you have gotten some new and fun software

It will probably not be released. There were too many bugs reported with 4.2 for the 8700. The 8100, and 88xx are written to that code.

It is rumored that the 9xxx series will have a whole new OS

I don't think you would really gain anything with 4.2 on the 8700.

I dont think there is much to gain from 4.2 for an 8700 series anyway, especially as the handhel hasnt got expandable memory...

But i cant deny i would have a play if i could...

I saw it and wasn't really impress slows the BB a bit and like you said no expandable memory so forget video and add only 2-3 mp3s
I would consider a 8800 before that

Hmm, sounds like I need to spend some money, and get a nice backup device. I guess the thing now, is which one.

I want QWERTY, but I want the size (width in particular) of the Pearl. 8800 looks ok, but it just looks like me having two 8700...

I have played with the 8800 - and i know its far superior but i prefer the wheel over the ball....

I wonder what the 9000 will be like

I had the 8100, 8700, and now the 8800. You get used to the trackball real quick, and I actually prefer it now because it makes navigation on the device much easier. Having the MicroSD on the 8800 is great. Let's me keep some movies stored to watch when I get bored at work

Also the built-in GPS does a pretty good job when used with BB Maps. I plan on posting a full review of the 8800 sometime this weekend.

The 8800 is sounding better and better everyday. A friend of mine had the 8800 but did not like the 'trackball' (or whatever it's called). Plus she paid full price, and I think being it's so simliar to the 8700 there is no 'Wow' factor, like the Windows Vista commercials - LOL

Do users of the 8700, and now switched to the 8800 see a 'Wow' factor? I know some people upgraded just to have the latest gadget despite features, etc, etc...

9xxx series ...okay I dont even want to know how amazing those devices would be. RIM is kicking them out at a fast pace

I think the 8800 is better. I prefer the trackball over the trackwheel. It's also great having built-in GPS and a MicroSd card slot.

I have a bit of a different perspective. I LOVE my 8700 and truly enjoy using the keyboard and the clickwheel. Now I decided I would move to the 8800 - I'm a sucker for new technology Always keeping current and upgrading - selling fairly new and in perfect condition electronics to friends or on Ebay. Anyway, I was excited to use my new 8800.

In my own personal and humble opinion, the 8800 didn't measure up. The 8800 is going back to the store. I can understand why people who want a full keyboard would switch from the Pearl. Or perhaps older models of BBs. Granted, I do prefer the size of the 8800 to the size of my 8700. However, I have no need for the expandable memory and the GPS. As far as multimedia, I have made customized ring tones and customized caller ID, etc... work on my 8700. Also, as far as music, I'm keeping my IPOD...

I found using the trackball was easy enough to get used to. I understand the argument for being able to go side to side. But I'm so used to my clickwheel that the trackball isn't enough to pull me away. Also, I found the keys on the 8800 a bit too close together for my liking. I used the device extensively for a week. In addition, I found that when you're used to the Zen Theme on the 8700 and all of the menus and icons on the right side of the screen, of course on the 8800, the Zen Dimension theme puts those things on the left side of the screen.

Anyway....I definitely didn't LOVE the 8800 like I was hoping to. And given my attachment to my 8700, I decided to take the 8800 back to Cingular and take a look at the 9000 series (hopefully in Q4). I must admit, I am one of the few that hopes that RIM will not toss out the clickwheel...if they do, I will move along with them...but here's to hoping!

As a matter of fact, am waiting for my tax returns. As soon as I get it, I think an 8800 or some other BlackBerry will be added to my inventory...

I'm in there with you and Navilyn!! Quick trun-a-round on technology gadgets!! It's rare I don't love a new device/upgrade - gotta move with the times (and yes, quite pricey!!)

Me too... The only thing I didn't like moving from the 8100 to the 8800, was losing the camera. I don't use it that much at all, but it was nice to have when the kiddo gives you that great candid moment and you really need a camera to capture it.

It took everything I had not to buy the 8800. But I will wait for the 8300. I don't mind the track ball I had the pearl and got use to it very fast. But I need space between the keys and wifi. So I will wait. But being the addict that I am I would upgrade my 8700 with 4.2.

I have to say, I think am a convert! The trackball is pretty easy once you get use to it. I can even send a message while driving now from my Pearl...

I dont fear the trackball, just prefer the wheel, and i have played for some time with a pearl. Actually my fear is more about the Sure Type than the ball....
