Chen has just effectively confirmed the next device will run Android.

    Goodbye BlackBerry, RIP.

Well done Chen and the NSA.

    Cheers,

I would say let's buy this device...Chen also said he would build it if his team can build it secure...then why not buy it if security and usability is taken care?

I truly believe that invasive marketing ( that comes more with android apps )cannot be secured . I think security and privacy go hand in hand because no one knows what the dungeon master independent android app developer does with personal information...which it directly related to security.

The way I have handled my personal info is that you don't give the dungeonmaster ALL of your info and simply trust him or the software to secure it....especially Google. " We need your info so we can offer services to serve your individual needs" Sounds nice a rosey and sugar coated but in reality it is to target market an individual, sell contact info and offer useless " services " that cost money.

If I run a Android device again it will be without Google, no "auto remember passwords" and will pretty much be stand alone. ....600 to 800 dollars for a device to look at Ads and being target Marketed to....no thanks. I will use my Passport or a z30 type touch until I cannot anymore.

Any secure version of Android would have to be a fork. Which means no OHA and no Google services. BlackBerry already collaborated with Boeing on a secure Android phone so their engineers, and therefore Chen, would know that. If you watch the CNBC interview with this in mind you will see that Chen was making a point with humor. Unfortunately the hosts didn't get it because they're clueless about technology.

Not possible to secure Android as OS is insecure by design. Also, you could not have access to the Google play store etc as at least half the applications are at least dubious (research by F Secure etc) so would have even fewer applications than BlackBerry 10.

    Cheers,

    Chris.

Why would he confirm using another OS if he announced the next version of BlackBerry OS?

No, and I can't imagine BB will ever abandon the BBOS for Android. They might release a cheap Andy-powered consumer device, but the security issues that the android architecture brings is contrary to everything that Blackberry has built and continues to market. Just doesn't make sense.

Absolutely. BB10 without the Android runtime? That's a dream device, imo.

PS. BB10, not BlackBerry OS (if you're talking about BB's most recent OS).

I can't see how that would help BB10, and why so many refute the run time. It's part of the OS yet is not being forced on anyone. Take that away, and you've really let the app gap get the better of you if you're BlackBerry. IMO, of course.

Of course therein lies the complication of making an android device. Unless BlackBerry made the runtime a download able addon for BB10, hmm.
