A new low-power, long-range version of Wi-Fi that bolsters Internet of Things (IoT) connections will be dubbed Wi-Fi HaLow, the Wi-Fi Alliance revealed in January in advance of CES.‎

The next generation of BlackBerry devices must support 802.11ah to impact the IoT market.

This is a WiFi format specifically for low power embedded devices that don't need a full range data connection, or don't need a strong antenna. Why would a handset need to support it? It's like saying that a tractor trailer needs to be able to drive on a bike path.
