In file manager I have a device/camera folder with 5 images. A photos folder with 254 images which I assume are the ones I moved over from my iphone using the device switch app.

Under the Misc/android/pictures are 254 images. Why are the images duplicated? Should I just deleted the ones under misc/android/pictures ?

Also under Misc/android/DCIM/Camera the 5 images are there that are also in my device/camera folder

    Why so many duplicates?

I would not delete anything just yet. Let someone tell us why not. I believe if you delete one set, you might lose them all.

    Wrong button...

Anyway, any media in misc/android are actually symbolic links to the rest of the file system. So there's only one actual copy of each file, which is how it can exceed the capacity of the device memory:

Both folders show a file size of 439mb if it were just a symbolic link why would it have such a large file size?

Because the reported file size is the size of the actual file, not the symbolic link.

What Thurask said. They're basically shortcuts.

Not sure why... Maybe so Android apps could access stored files/photos, if relevant? (Just guessing here, NOT saying that's why.)

Anyway OP: you can test it out. Take a screenshot or a photo, check File Manager to see it's in both places, then delete it in one place to see if it's also deleted in the other.
