    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could explain what it means that Blackberry now supports exFat in their latest update? I am using a 64 Gb Sandisk micro SD card in my Blackberry Z30. Do we have to format the card in the exFat format to make it work better? Is the card supposed to work better because of the update?

    Thanks

The proper format for SDXC cards (ie. 64GiB and larger) is exFAT. Any other file system is technically out of spec. Exfat was designed for larger disks (up to 16 TiB, I think), so it's much more efficient at these large sizes. It also supports files > 4GiB in size. Some SDCARD manufacturers actually say not to format the card as anything other than exfat. If you have an existing card, which you formatted as FAT32, you will have to save the contents, and rw-format as exFAT. Please note that several people have reported issues accessing their SDCARD from their computer after formatting it as exFAT. It works fine from the device and in USB Mass storage mode, but not via the network share.

I think exFat also means you can transfer BOTH Mac And PC files on the go. That can be done with a flash drive. That's what I remember from my Basic Macs Class.

Macs and PCs both supported FAT32.

Z30STA100-5/10.3.0.296 would not auto download exfat drivers. I downgrades to 10.2.1 and it auto downloaded and worked but would not work when I released 10.3.

Any one know how we could manually download these drivers?

I don't think that is possible. Hopefully the next 10.3 leak will have the same ability as the later 10.2.1 builds to automatically download the driver.

Why isn't the driver just built into the OS? What is with downloading it?

FAT32 which pretty much everyone uses was something developped in the 90s for Windows 95. It's very outdated and has limited file sizes and drive partition sizes. Unfortunately, adoption of exFAT is dang slow because everyone has to pay Microsoft to use it.

Im having the same issue. My SD card (64GB) says driver cannot e downloaded. I ordered a new one. Tell me when it comes that it also will not be able to download the driver?
I have copied all my data to my laptop, tried to format on the PC (only in fat32). how to format exFat? Is that when i place it in the phone and it "downloads" the driver?
Since it can't with 10.3.0.296, should I wait to use the new card?

Oh and RFA doesn't work for me either. Looks like the file system is messing up both things.....

Sounds like not. I have read stories about formatting them as fat32 can cause all kinds of issues too. One member started a thread on the pc doesn't see it as exFat after he managed to get it formatted as exFat so more work to be done yet.

Probably a licensing thing, as Microsoft charges a pretty penny for using their proprietary file system.

So maybe this new card I bought should stay in the package until the OS matures?

Or until the driver thing is fixed. I'm sure if it isn't you'll have the same issues.

You all know that sd cards formatted into the device are NTFS. I dont know if exFAT really has a big advantage over NTFS

Default device format should be FAT32, not NTFS.

Yes. For some reason my 16 and 32 gig cards work with no problems but nothing with the 64. Just wait for a newer 10.3 build

This is what I'm thinking. I formatted my card to fat32 and when i put it in my phone it seems ok but the format says ntfs....and im having problems with it playing music thru BT in my car. Looks like I will give that up to keep 10.3 for now...........

You can stick it in your device and see if it works. By working I mean the driver is automatically downloaded - which I don't think works in the current 10.3 builds people on here are using.

The worst case that should happen is that your phone prompts you to format the new card which you should not do as it is probably already ExFAT.

Try to see if your device works with a card formatted on NTFS

I took my 64GB card and put it in my 10.3 Z30...it repeatedly says it can't download the driver.....but DOES create the proper file structure on the card. I also cleared it and put it in my Z10 (with a 10.2.1 os) and that phone also said it couldn't download driver. So now I'm not sure if its the card or the 10.3.

And I don't know what to do with the new one. Should I try sticking it in the Z30 with 10.3 and seeing if it DOES download a driver? or isn't that possible because its a Microsoft product???

When you say "nothing" for the 64GB card, what exactly do you mean? Does it play music BT in your car? That's what I'm after.....

The ExFAT driver being from Microsoft is irrelevant as it is downloading on other systems fine.

I still say it can't hurt to try putting you new SD card in your phone because the worst it would want is for you to format the card (which you should not do if it is ExFAT formatted already).
