Why doesn't BlackBerry just support the unpacking of Android apps in their original Apk form?

Why is the conversion needed when the contents of the package are unchanged...

Instead of having devs/users convert the apps to be recognised by the BlackBerry devices, why not make the os recognise the file as it is?

    Wouldn't that make everything easier?

    Just a thought...

I think it has to do with signing keys for Developers

But the apk is signed already, it should install on the runtime just like it's an android device inside the phone.

The runtime even got it's own file system just for that.

Android APKs can be signed by "self signed"keys.

The Android player doesn't support the entire API, part of the conversion process is detecting unsupported code.

But can't that be added in a future player update?
Since android is open source and all...
And since we're getting the apps anyway... it'll only make it easier for us, users.

The point of the Android runtime wasn't for everyone to be side loading apps like crazy. The point was for android developers to submit to BlackBerry World, so the conversion was so that they would be downloaded in the bar format like native apps.

What Joey said is true. It was never BB (or when they made the decision as RIM) to have people rely on Android apps
They were hoping that a few years into the new platform, devs would switch over to the native cascades
Now, the conversion process being used to detect unsupported coding? Hmm, not so sure about that. The native library is inside the android runtime, so almost everything should be supported on the old runtime at this point

Except JNI for one. There is quite a list.

As has been pointed out many times, Android is not the most secure mobile OS. One important purpose of player limitations and therefore the need for conversion is security.

why we can't install apk directly on our BlackBerry 10?

because our BlackBerry 10 is not Samsung Galaxy S4..

It wasn't intended indeed, but we all know how that turned out..

Maybe a change in the plan? Give options, if someone doesn't want them on their phones they shouldn't use them..

I would prefer they go the other way and remove the Android player. If you want to run Android apps buy an Android phone.

The player was designed to let Android app developers get their programs on BB10 devices as quickly and easily as possible, yet still be as similar to native apps as possible.

The fact that the process has been used to set up a grey market for side loading is beside the point and not a small irritant to developers who's IP has been stolen.
