Hi,
Why is that you can't change the permissions in the Android apps, the buttons always appear grey.
Has it something to do with the Android runtime environment?
Is there a way to do something about that? Options in code somewhere?

the runtime never allowed for it
Actually, the 4.3 runtime does allow some modifications to the permissions, but you need another app called App Ops to change them within the runtime. The BB10 App Manager can't access them directly.
If I remember correctly, Android device needs to be rooted (Jellybean) for App Ops to work.
No, it works fine actually.
Thanks for the clarification. My rooting skills are obviously rusty these days. 😁
Can I find App Ops in BBW? Or its a side-load app?

It would be an android app. You won't find it in BBW. There's many apps that use the App Ops feature, but it is still an apk that you can directly install.
Got it, and thanks for the quick reply.

Have you tired any of these apps?

If Yes, would you recommend any in specific? Or I'll need to try all of them and figure it based on who does a better job?
Combined with AppNinja that won't do what App Ops can, but will provide enough information for the regular consumer such as myself on which apps are BB native VS Android.

Those apps won't allow you to change Android permissions on BB10. The best way to see if an app is Android or native is to swipe down from the top of the device and see if it asks you to hide the back button. All apps that work through the runtime will have it.
Permissions in Android even in latest version are tricky. People have found out that apps still access your data despite permissions being cut off. That was a big deal issue in Marshmallow days, if I remember correctly it was 5.0 that brought custom permissions

Not 5.0 but 6.0 which is Marshmallow that brought custom permissions

Thanks for all these answers!
App Ops seems the best solution so far, but what version of Android is the runtime running in BB10?
I am not sure I get it. what do you mean by "to hide the back button"The best way to see if an app is Android or native is to swipe down from the top of the device and see if it asks you to hide the back button. All apps that work through the runtime will have it.
So I could edit permissions from within my device?I found these 2 to be really helpful

My computer is on Linux and I am not sure I can do anything else with my Classic connected than mass storage.
About App Ops, this article explains everything: https://www.androidauthority.com/app...d-know-324850/
But it is toolate to installl it on 10.3.3, isn't it?
The runtime in BB10 is Android 4.3.
In my Z10, I used the permissions app built into Cobalt's Google settings, part of the set of apps to get the Play Store running. It accessed the same permissions that the App Ops app did.
Thanks for the link. I think he meant that if it's an android app and got doubts, instead try sliding your finger from the top screen as you do with native BlackBerry apps to access setting for make payment for that app. Not all BlackBerry native apps are alike when you slide the top bar, but easily distinguishable from Android apps working in BlackBerry environment. I hope that can answer your question, and hope what I described is that the other CB member meant.

Thanks, I am not familiar with the Play Store yet. You need to set up an account, right?
Cobalt's file share (download to PC and move files over to device):
https://mega.nz/#F!lIUWjSSQ!yoLoiNX3PNG3Sef1Fa_fMA
Install and login with 4.3.3.
Install and register with 2.8.
Install Play Store v6 build2.
***Stop here if all you want is Play Store
Install Play Services v11.
Install 4.4.4 (but don't open after)
Install Play Games v5 (if desired).
Install whitelist 1.0.0.6.
***If an app requires Google Play Services, then:
Download app with Cobalt's Play Store (but don't install).
Whitelist unpatched app.
Patch app on PC with Play Services Patcher 1.6 using defaults settings.
Install patched app.
Yes, but I already had an account from the days before there was Gmail... well, before it became widely used, so my account name is not a Gmail email account.
You can still do that, but for a while, Google tried to force you into a Gmail account - making it seem like there was no other choice. Even back around 2011 (setting up my son's Galaxy S2), you actually had to have a gmail.com account to setup an android phone. They simply would not accept any other type of email address. That has since changed, but it was a hassle at the time.
Thank you for the link and the instructions conite.:D
I will give it a try soon.
So, if i get it right, Cobalt is a version of Google Play Store for BB10. That means I'll have an extra third store on my device, after BBW and AmazonStore (which I never use btw ).
But this one will be for the Android apps only. And it runs in the Android runtime.
It seems like securing Android apps has to be set through nothing but more (Google) apps...
It would be far more simple if those permissions could be modified natively.
Because, if I understand well, it's not the runtime in BB10 that doesn't allow permission changes, but the Android apps themselves. It is just the new policy on Android apps. (I have to find that link again)
I don't know, seems like a hand full of apps to install. Are some of them running in the background, consuming the battery?
I'll get more infos about the Google Services and why it's needed for permissions mutability and also for push notifications (offline, inside the device). I thought it was to get apps' updates and such (online)
App Ops still remains a simpler solution, since you only have to install one app. If I were to get a version for 4.3, I could also give a try.
Cobalt is a person. He just modified the actual Google Play Store to work on BB10.
Likewise apps can be patched to use a modified version of Google Play Services.
"PlayStore is maintained by cobalt232."
Yes, sorry, hadn't read it through properly..
So I guess I'll have to create an account on Google Play Store. Was trying to avoid that... Not all Androids apps are in GooPS.
